The Issue

Every day, residents and travelers pass through Washington Road near Lakeshore Drive in Washington, Illinois, completely unaware of the danger that looms in the darkness. For many, it is just another bend on their commute or stroll; for me, it is a harrowing reminder of a tragic loss that I endure daily.

My beloved husband, Michael Ayers, was a victim of this very darkness. On a night that should have been like any other, he was struck and killed by a vehicle while trying to cross this pitch-black stretch of road. Had there been sufficient street lighting, perhaps the driver could have seen him—perhaps Michael would still be with us today.

The absence of a street light on Washington Road near Lakeshore Drive is an undeniable hazard. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, poor visibility accounts for a significant percentage of pedestrian accidents. Introducing proper lighting has been proven to decrease such incidents considerably, by 30% or more. This isn't just about preventing more accidents; it's about saving lives.

We are not asking for monumental changes, just a simple yet potentially life-saving street light installation on that notorious bend. This small adjustment will not only honor Michael's memory but will also protect countless others who use this path day in and day out.

Join me in urging the local council and city planners to take immediate action. By signing this petition, you are not only supporting a practical and necessary change but you are also helping to ensure that no other family has to suffer the same tragedy that befell Michael and us. Please stand with me and sign to push for a safer community for all.

This was an email response we received from Mayor Stevens regarding the petition, who in their reply had yet had a chance to review the petition but wanted to be sure to highlight the upcoming meeting: If there's a request for Council action, I suggest that community members attend our next City Council meeting that will be held the 1st Monday in November at 6:30 pm in Banquet Room A at Five Points. Sincerely, Lilija Stevens Mayor, City of Washington”
