The Issue

Safety is a paramount concern for residents living on the southern end of 62nd Ave E, just before 152nd St E, here in Puyallup, WA. Many of our neighbors, including a significant number of elderly individuals, have been affected by a disturbing rise in criminal activities. Vehicle theft, property damage, vandalism of locking mailboxes, and package thefts have become concerningly frequent occurrences. While installing a street light may not completely eradicate these issues, it could serve as an effective means to deter criminals and provide residents with a greater sense of security. We believe that a well-lit street can help identify crimes in progress and those responsible for them.

The installation of a street light is not an unreasonable request but a necessary step towards increasing safety in our community. Several studies have shown that improved street lighting can reduce crime rates by discouraging offenders and enhancing surveillance opportunities. According to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, areas with increased street lighting saw crime rates drop by an average of 21%.

Our community deserves to feel safe, and a street light installation is a concrete action that can contribute to this. We propose that this street light be installed by Pierce County authorities on the southern end of 62nd Ave E and hope they recognize the importance of our request.

Please join us in urging the local governing bodies to take immediate action. Sign this petition to support the installation of a street light and make our community a safer place to live.
