The Issue

I bike to school every day along SE 276th St. It's a route many students in Maple Valley, WA take on their way to and from school. However, every ride comes with a risk that shouldn't exist. The lack of a sidewalk along the full length of SE 276th St exposes students to potential accidents involving passing vehicles. I believe the city should install a sidewalk for our safety.

SE 276th St is a key route for students. Many of my peers and I rely on it to reach our educational institution. Without a designated walkway, we're forced to share the road with cars and trucks. This not only puts us at risk but also makes it inconvenient for drivers who need to be continuously vigilant to avoid children cycling on the roadway.

Implementing a sidewalk would have several benefits. It would greatly enhance the safety of all students, encourage more kids to bike or walk to school by providing a safe path, and reduce traffic congestion as fewer parents would need to drive their children. It is a community improvement that sends a message prioritizing the safety and well-being of students.

According to national traffic safety statistics, pedestrian and cyclist fatalities have been increasingly alarming in areas without sidewalks. Installing a sidewalk aligns with our community's goal to be a safe and welcoming place for families.

I urge the local council and responsible entities to take action that will safeguard the futures of young residents. Sign this petition to call on Maple Valley authorities to pave a much-needed sidewalk along SE 276th St. Your signature can be the catalyst that makes our daily commutes not just easier, but safer.
