The Issue

As a member of the Grapevine community and a parent of a precious 5-year-old boy who is autistic, I am writing this petition to plead for your support to set up a sensory room at the Grapevine Recreation Center. Our beloved community center offers many fantastic family-friendly activities but can be a sensory overload for our neurodivergent community...even neurotypical children who struggle with transitions or anxiety. Our children need a calming sanctuary to soothe their nervous systems or that can help them feel safe and comfortable after engaging in various activities.

According to a study by the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, sensory rooms have been proven to significantly decrease distress and improve engagement among individuals with developmental disorders (AJOT, 2005). The addition of a sensory room in our rec center will not only provide a supportive environment for neurodivergent children but also signal to all families that in our community, everyone's needs are recognized and respected.

Creating a sensory room is a clear sign of an inclusive community—the enhancement it will bring to the lives of neurodivergent individuals, their families, and our community as a whole will be immense and noteworthy.

We graciously request to the management of the Grapevine Recreation Center: recognize our needs, stand with us, and act swiftly to install a sensory room.

To all our fellow parents, caregivers, family, and friend of the ND community, we cannot do this alone. We need your help. Lend your voice to ours and please consider signing this petition. Together, we can enrich the lives of the neurodivergent community in Grapevine!
