Install a School/Safety Resource Officer at Mary Moss @ J. Albert Adams Academy
The Issue
Mary Moss @ J. Albert Adams Academy is an Anne Arundel County Public School located at 245 Clay Street, Annapolis, MD. It is an Educational Option/Alternative Setting, where many of the students who attend our school have behavioral issues are considered "at risk".
I am starting this petition to ask you for your support to procure a School Resource Officer at the Mary Moss @ J. Albert Adams Academy. Many of our students have been incarcerated or adjudicated, and come to us as a term of their Community Offenses.
In my years of working at this school, I find myself growing increasingly concerned for my safety, and the safety of my co-workers. We are virtually “sitting ducks”. Although, in the past, we have requested protective support of a School Resource Officer, there seems to be a mysterious reason why we can’t have one. Most of the middle and high schools within Anne Arundel County have a School Resource Officer stationed at their locations. What is most distressing about our lack of protection at our school, is that if a student is caught with drugs or a weapon at their comprehensive schools (and they are in 6 through 9th grade), they are sent to Mary Moss.
So, there is not merely a “possibility” that the student “might” be a safety violator. They have already been caught with a weapon or posed a threat to their comprehensive environment, so they are sent here. There have been several members of the Executive Staff within the Anne Arundel County School System who have attempted or promised the protection of a School Resource Officer to our school, but each of them have systematically failed to deliver on the promise.
Thank you for your time. My contact information is here, if you have any questions or would like further information. Please feel free to share this petition with whomever you feel would have an interest in the protection and safety of the Staff and Students at Mary Moss @ J. Albert Adams Academy.
