Install a red light camera at Fountain and Gardner

The Issue

I would like to present this petition to the West Hollywood public safety council at their meeting on July 28, 2025.

Just a few days ago, a bicycle rider was tragically killed at the intersection of Fountain Ave and Gardner Street in West Hollywood. Today, my daughter was walking through the crosswalk at the same intersection when a car ran a red light, narrowly avoiding a serious accident. One week ago, we met a man at the sheriff’s station who had been hit while riding his bike in the same location, sustaining injuries. This intersection is clearly problematic and poses a significant risk to both pedestrians and bicyclists alike.

The safety of our community is paramount, and it is time for the West Hollywood city council to take immediate action. Installing a red light camera at this intersection could prevent reckless driving and ensure compliance with traffic signals, thereby protecting countless lives. Red light cameras are known to reduce the number of violations by 40-50% according to a study by the Federal Highway Administration.

Moreover, cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco have successfully reduced accidents and fatalities by installing red light cameras at dangerous intersections. The technology helps deter drivers from running red lights, a key factor in over 50% of all urban crashes as reported by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

This life-saving measure needs immediate consideration. Let's urge our local government to take a stand for safety and make our streets safer for everyone. Demand the installation of a red light camera at Fountain Ave and Gardner Street. Sign this petition to support this crucial change and help prevent further tragedies in our community.
