The Issue
Living on Flat Rock Road has its daily challenges, and one of the most significant issues we face is the heavy traffic at the intersection of Flat Rock Road and Highway 142. As someone who navigates this route regularly, I can tell you firsthand that it's not just inconvenient—it's dangerous. It often takes me 10 to 12 minutes just to pull out onto Highway 142. When attempting to make a left turn onto Flat Rock Road, there have been times where we've narrowly avoided rear-end collisions. This issue is only going to worsen with the new developments on the horizon.
The area is growing rapidly with the construction of an Amazon Data Center, which will likely have entrances on Flat Rock Road. Moreover, the expansion of Covington works on Hwy 142 promises to bring even more traffic. This means significantly more vehicles trying to maneuver through an already congested intersection, increasing the risk of accidents and extended delays.
Installing a red light at this critical intersection will help manage the traffic flow and enhance the level of safety for everyone who drives, cycles, or walks along these roads. A traffic light would provide necessary breaks in traffic, allowing residents and commuters like me to enter and exit our roads more safely and without the frustrating, risky delays we're currently experiencing.
Furthermore, according to traffic studies, traffic lights are known to reduce accidents at intersections by as much as 50%, according to various Department of Transportation reports. With the increase in traffic due to the new projects, adding this safety measure could prevent serious accidents and injuries.
We urge the local government of Newton County, Georgia to take immediate action to install a traffic light at Flat Rock Road and Hwy 142. This improvement will not only accommodate the projected increase in traffic but will also protect the lives of those in our community.
