Install a raised traffic platform on Opawa Road for pedestrian safety
The issue
Currently, there is an existing speed bump to the east, but the lack of traffic calming directly opposite the shops creates a high-speed "gap." This makes crossing Opawa Road to access the local café, Preschools schools and businesses hazardous for everyone—particularly elderly residents, children, and shoppers.
Opawa Road is a bustling hub in our community with frequent pedestrian traffic. Despite the efforts to control vehicle speed further down the road, the area in front of the shops remains dangerous due to cars speeding through the gap. This oversight leaves a critical area unprotected, putting vulnerable pedestrians from the bus stop crossing the road from the bus stop at risk every single day.
The statistics underline our concerns. According to the New Zealand Road Safety Survey, pedestrian-related incidents often occur in areas lacking sufficient traffic calming measures. With an increasing number of people utilising Opawa Road for daily activities, these risks can't be ignored any longer.
A raised traffic platform in front of the shops would serve as an effective solution. Such platforms, proven successful elsewhere in Christchurch, significantly slow down vehicles, allowing pedestrians to cross safely. It's a cost-effective measure that prioritises the safety of our community without causing undue inconvenience to drivers. The raised platform will also seamlessly integrate with existing road features, enhancing overall traffic management along Opawa Road.
Our community needs to act now to prevent potential accidents and ensure that Opawa Road is safe for everyone. Let's not wait for a serious incident to happen before making a change.
Please sign the petition to urge the Christchurch City Council to install a raised traffic platform on Opawa Road. Together, we can make a difference and create a safer environment for all residents and visitors.
