The Issue

Every school day, I hold my breath as I accompany my child to school. We've both had close calls, narrowly avoiding vehicles that fail to stop at the zebra crossing. It's not just us – countless parents and children experience the same fear as we try to navigate the crossing near our local school. The situation is dire, and I worry not only for my child but for every child and parent in our community who must face this danger every day.

The current zebra crossing setup is supposed to be a safeguard, ensuring the safety of each pedestrian that steps off the curb. However, this is not the reality. Drivers often ignore the rule that requires them to stop once a pedestrian is on the crossing, creating numerous near-misses and making the school run an anxiously unpredictable event. It is time for us to take action before a tragic accident occurs.

We urgently need a pelican crossing in place of the current zebra crossing. Unlike zebra crossings, pelican crossings are controlled by traffic lights, ensuring that vehicles must come to a stop when it is safe for pedestrians to cross. By installing a pelican crossing, we can make sure that every child, parent, and pedestrian can safely cross without the constant fear of being hit by a noncompliant vehicle.

Research has shown that pedestrian light-controlled crossings, such as pelican crossings, significantly reduce the risk of accidents. According to the UK Department for Transport, pelican crossings are proven to be one of the safest types of pedestrian crossings. This simple change can make a significant difference, providing peace of mind for parents and promoting road safety for the entire community.

Please join me in urging the local council and our school officials to prioritize the safety of our children and community by installing a pelican crossing. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for safer streets and communities. Together, we can prevent potential accidents and create a secure environment for everyone. Let's not wait for a serious incident to galvanize us into action. Sign the petition today and make our school crossing a safe crossing.

If possible when signing in the reason of anyone has had any near- misses experiences please share! Don’t need names etc but details of what happened and times.
