Install Pedestrian Flashing Beacons at the Union Street Rotary

The Issue

Senator John F. Keenan

Senator Brian A. Joyce

Representative Mark Cusack

Dear Legislators:

The Union Street Rotary is a major intersection of on and off ramps of Route 3 as well as a main thoroughfare through Braintree. According to MassDOT Crash Portal since 2002 there have been 23 accidents on the on and off ramp at the crosswalk and over 200 crashes on the rotary as a whole.

Many residents use Union Street to walk to the MBTA Station as well as the Library and Town Hall as it is one of the few main pedestrian access ways across the town divided by Route 3. Walking encourages a healthy lifestyle and helps connect the community together.

We, the undersigned call upon Massachusetts Department of Transportation to install pedestrian flashing beacons on the two crosswalks of the Union Street Rotary in Braintree. These flashing beacons can be activated by pedestrians via a push button, turning on the flashing beacons, alerting drivers to stop for pedestrians. These beacons have been used successfully in Braintree on Liberty Street at the entrance to Pond Meadow Park as well as the Crosswalk on Grossman Drive by Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates.

We respectfully request that you support this important safety initiative.

Thank you for your consideration.
