Install a Guardrail at 10495 US-231 South in Arab, AL Before Another Life Is Lost

Install a Guardrail at 10495 US-231 South in Arab, AL Before Another Life Is Lost
The Issue
I’m raising awareness for the urgent need for a guardrail along US-231 South, just north of Arab, Alabama, near Picker’s Choice.
This section of Highway 231 also has horrible flooding problems due to inadequate drainage.
On November 6, 2024, my wife was driving northbound on US-231 when her vehicle hydroplaned, crossed into the southbound lane, and landed at the bottom of a 30-foot ravine. She survived the crash—but suffered a traumatic brain injury that continues to impact her daily life. Nearly a year later, we still don’t know if she will fully recover.
More recently, another crash happened in the same area—resulting in one fatality and injuring the remaining passengers.
I’m not claiming that a guardrail would prevent every accident. But it could serve as a critical layer of protection—something to reduce the severity of crashes, and potentially keep vehicles from leaving the roadway entirely.
We’re calling on the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) to take this concern seriously and install a guardrail at this location before more lives are put at risk.
Additionally, the area’s inadequate drainage issue that increases the risk for hydroplaning needs to be addressed.
Please join us in asking ALDOT to evaluate and address this safety issue. Your signature shows that our community cares—and that we believe even one life is worth protecting.
