Install a Crosswalk at Beatty Elementary

Install a Crosswalk at Beatty Elementary
The Issue
My children, along with many other kids, attend school in a bustling area of Las Vegas that lacks a crucial safety feature—a crosswalk. The absence of a additional crosswalk near the school gate means that children, parents, and teachers are forced to navigate across a busy road without any designated pedestrian space. It's a half-mile journey to find the nearest crosswalk, which is not only inconvenient but potentially dangerous, particularly during the hectic morning and afternoon school run.
School zones should be safe havens for children, but the lack of a crosswalk in this area poses an inherent risk. Traffic in Las Vegas is notorious for its speed and density, and expecting young children to traverse such roads without adequate protection is both unrealistic and unsafe. This situation is a safety hazard waiting to happen, and it endangers not only the students attending school but also the community members who travel through the area.
According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian fatalities in traffic incidents are a rising concern across the United States, with school zones identified as critical areas in need of focus. Implementing a crosswalk in our school's vicinity could significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and increase the safety of all pedestrians, fostering an environment where children feel secure walking to and from school.
We urge local authorities in Las Vegas, including the Department of Transportation and the Board of Education, to prioritize the installation of a crosswalk near our school. This measure would not only enhance safety but also demonstrate a commitment to protecting our children and community. Let's take action to prevent accidents rather than reacting to them.
Please join us in signing this petition to compel decision-makers to take immediate steps towards a safer, more secure environment for our children.
