The Issue

Joe Casey Park is one of the few genuinely child-friendly, free public spaces we have in the Somerset community, offering a safe outdoor environment for all. That's why it's so concerning that the entrance to the trail leading into the park poses such a safety hazard.

Situated on a blind corner, the trail entrance at Joe Casey Park is a daily risk for the children and pedestrians who frequent it. Without proper safety measures like a crosswalk and appropriate signage, every stroll to the park is accompanied by the dread of a potential accident. It's not just about convenience; it's about ensuring that our public spaces remain safe and welcoming.

Crosswalks and traffic signs are simple, yet essential solutions that could prevent tragic incidents. According to the Federal Highway Administration, introducing crosswalks can reduce pedestrian accidents by up to 40%! That's a significant reduction in risk we owe to our community's children and everyone who enjoys the park.

I urge our local authorities to prioritize the safety of Joe Casey Park users by installing a crosswalk and necessary signage at the trail entrance. Resolving this safety issue would show our commitment to maintaining the park as a beacon of community, safety, and freedom for our children to enjoy the outdoors.

Let's make Joe Casey Park safe for everyone and ensure it remains an outdoor sanctuary for children, teens, and adults alike.
