The Issue

Brewer Road is a canyon within the community of Alta Sierra in Grass Valley, California, where we face a serious safety and communication challenge that affects hundreds of residents and Alta Sierra Elementary School. This road and the surrounding areas experience frequent power outages that cut off our only lifeline to the outside world—cell service. This isn’t just inconvenient; it’s dangerous for families, neighbors, and especially the 400+ students and staff at Alta Sierra Elementary School located right on Brewer Road.

Imagine being unable to call emergency services, check on your loved ones, or reach friends during a power outage—or another snowmageddon. That’s what Brewer Road area residents experience again and again, left isolated and vulnerable without a reliable way to communicate. Our children in school face the same risk, with no effective means of reaching out for help if needed.

A cell tower above Brewer Road Canyon would change that, giving us reliable coverage during outages and ensuring that help is only a phone call away. Strong, consistent cell service means faster emergency response times, safer families, and peace of mind for everyone in the community.

But safety also depends on where and how the tower is placed. When a cell tower catches fire, it can take up to an hour to shut down power, and because these are electrical fires, they’re often harder to control and more destructive. In fact, the Alta Sierra tower had electrical issues just last year and nearly caught fire before the fire department contained it. That’s why it’s so important that any new tower be installed in a safe, responsible location—away from homes and schools—while still being effective and even thoughtfully designed to fit our community. By planning placement wisely, we can have both the safety and the service we need.

Nearly 97% of Americans rely on cell phones every day—for personal use, but most importantly, for emergencies. Brewer Road Canyon deserves that same security and reliability.

Please sign this petition to support a carefully placed cell tower for Brewer Road Canyon. Together, we can keep our families, our school, and our community connected and safe.
