The Issue

As a school bus driver for the Central Unified School District, firsthand experience with the punishing heat inside our buses during the warmer months leads to concern for both the safety and well-being of drivers and students alike. Every day, up to 70 children are entrusted to our care on these routes, where temperatures can soar making conditions utterly unbearable.

Driving under such conditions is physically taxing. Headaches from the heat are a common occurrence, often lingering into the following day, affecting not only driving performance but our overall health. This situation raises significant safety concerns; being affected by heat can severely hamper a driver’s concentration, posing a potential risk to our most precious cargo, the children of our community.

Adequately equipped buses with air conditioning could effectively mitigate these risks. Air conditioning would not only enhance passenger comfort but also improve driver focus and response times, providing a safer driving environment. Young students, particularly, are at a higher risk for heat-related health issues, such as dehydration or heat exhaustion.

Safety always remains a paramount aspect of our duties. Studies have shown that heat can affect cognitive function and decision-making, crucial components during a bus driver's routine. Reports indicate that implementing air conditioning can significantly reduce temperature-related risk factors, supportive of creating a healthier environment.

We urge the Central Unified School District to prioritize the installation of air conditioning units in all school buses. By investing in climate-controlled transportation, we ensure a safe and comfortable journey for our students and safeguard the well-being and performance of our drivers.

Please, join us in advocating for this essential update. Sign this petition to guarantee that every child's journey to and from school is undertaken in safe, controlled, and comfortable conditions.
