Instagram Hold Ye (Kanye West) Accountable for Bullying and Harassment Policies
The Issue
If Instagram indeed takes seriously its reported commitment to preventing cyberbullying and harassment, Instagram needs to answer for why it has not deactivated the account of Ye (Kanye West) despite multiple reports submitted by users alerting to his multiple recent posts that were harassing his estranged wife (Kim Kardashian West) in addition to harassing and threatening violence to (and encouraging others to harass and/or commit violence against) actor/comedian Pete Davidson.
Although the posts were deleted by the account or possibly by Instagram in some instances, it should not matter as the account has shown a consistent premeditated PATTERN over time, which is indicative of bullying and harassment. It was not just some “one off” post.
In his most recent post, “Ye” calls himself a leader. While that may be arguable, he no doubt is a high-profile individual and influential to millions. Regardless, he should be held to the same policies and codes of conduct as others on the platform.
If this kind of behavior is allowed by Instagram for him, it sends a message to ALL that bullying, including flagrantly inciting others to harass (he made a post encouraging the public to shout at Pete and Kim when they see them in public), threatening to commit violence against another person, and posting photos of private texts when the other person (allegedly Kim Kardashian) was asking him to stop doing so…
it sends the message to millions that posts and behavior like this are permitted by Instagram after all.
