Pine Richland Community members have an opportunity to hear from Randi Pink, the author of Angel of Greenwood, a powerful novel that tells the story of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre through the eyes of two young Black teens. Angel of Greenwood has been highly regarded for its emotional depth, historical significance, and the way it brings light to a dark chapter in American history that is often overlooked and not taught about enough.

Unfortunately, despite its importance, the book was recently denied by Pine Richland’s School Board for entrance into the 9th grade curriculum. Despite hearing from qualified educators and teachers that vouched the books importance, the majority still voted against it. The students are impassioned by this book and this story. We firmly believe that diverse texts are going to further our education rather than hold us back. We are hoping that the community will take it upon themselves to read this book, and not let the school board decision influence their reading.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             To continue this important conversation, we are raising funds to bring Randi Pink to our community for a special in person conversation, where she will share the personal significance of Angel of Greenwood and discuss why stories like hers are critical for students, families, and educators. This is a chance for parents and students to engage in a conversation about historical understanding, representation, and why books like hers are critical in public education.

Your donation will help cover travel and accommodations for Randi Pink’s visit. By supporting this event, you are helping ensure that important stories like Angel of Greenwood continue to be heard, and that students will always have access to diverse stories in their curriculum. These stories will help them gain empathy, understanding, and critical thinking skills.

Together, we can ensure that our community remains a place where all voices are valued, and that diverse perspectives are being heard and appreciated.

Please consider donating today to help bring Randi Pink to our community. Opportunities like this, help ensure that Pine Richland stays the fantastic public school that it is.
