Many are wondering about whether this is only an Ontario issue. Here is Dara Bowser's response to two key questions: IS THIS ISSUE ONLY IN ONTARIO? "While all of the problem installations that I am aware of are in Ontario, this equipment was sold nationally, so there is every reason to believe that these problems exist outside of Ontario. That said, the problem is not well known." WHY IS THE ISSUE SO PRONOUNCED IN ONTARIO? "Outside of Ontario, the HVAC requirements contained in the applicable building code are not usually enforced. The issue of whether or not the equipment complies with the building code does not often arise. When it does, there is not much expertise available as to what constitutes code compliance and what does not. These systems are preferred in smaller, urban, attached (town house) type units and often installed with water heaters as the heat source. This is a popular building form in Ontario and especially in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) but not so much in the rest of Canada. Consequently, we suspect that the majority of Canadian installations of this equipment are in the GTA. There are very few companies outside of Ontario with the ability to test the actual performance of this equipment after installation. The companies that could do this are research or commercially oriented companies, so they would tend not to get involved in compliance testing of HVAC systems for consumers. All of this means that there are probably similar problems outside of Ontario, but there are probably fewer of them, and no-one is verifying whether or not they comply with the Building Code." ============================================= Thank you to Dara Bowser for this additional information, and for his continued leadership related to this important issue. To those who have already signed this petition, thank you! If you know of others who may be willing to sign, we would appreciate it if you would ask them to do so.
