20 years ago a case of 'mistaken identity' led to Dwayne Nolan, 20 at the time, being arrested and receiving a life sentence. Dwayne walked into a Detroit Police Precinct on June 27, 2000 looking to retrieve an impounded vehicle that he lent a friend. What he didn't know is that although he did NOT match the description, detectives had decided that they can still make a case against him as a murder suspect for a shooting that occurred weeks earlier.
Because of his youth and unwavering faith in the system, he did what he was told and the end result was a life prison sentence. Once he realized that just because you're innocent doesn't mean you will not go to prison, he began his tireless journey to clear his name and get out of prison. As a result, of this tragic event, he and his family have suffered in many ways. His Parents took a significant financial loss while retaining an attorney to fight their son's legal battle. The counsel that they were able to retain also played a role in this conviction. During trial his counsel did not put up a defense and failed to call multiple key alibi witnesses, leaving the jury no choice but to convict. His Counsel on appeal accepted payments, but failed to investigate and cite important issues. After years of research, Dwayne uncovered important documents about the case and learned that detectives and prosecutors withheld vital evidence. Now Dwayne is forging ahead to prove his innocence. After hiring a private investigator who tracked down one of the prosecution's key witnesses, who initially lied, the witness stated that he was pressured by police to name Dwayne. Dwayne's greatest fear has always been, losing his only chance to prove his innocence and ultimately dying in prison. Sadly, in 2014, one of his alibi witnesses died, and with COVID 19 lurking and people getting old the chances of that recurring have increased.
And the biggest tragedy...
His father, now 83, has suffered from a mild stroke and has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. At times when Dwayne calls him, he doesn't even know who he is. Dwayne's father is no longer able to care for himself and is reliant on his wife who is 78 years old. Dwayne's mother, 66, is working two jobs to care for her necessities and trying, as she is able, to help her son undo this injustice. And most striking to me, is his 23 year old daughter who was just 2 years old when her father was snatched away from her. Now she has a 2 year old whom her father has never seen in person. In fact, since the start of the pandemic, he has not seen any of his family whom he so treasures. In the midst of being stripped away from his family, he has still found a way to be an amazing father and son. As I have personally witnessed, he regular checks on the welfare of his family, as he is able to under the circumstances. Over the years, he has struggled from prison to have an impact on his daughter's life, and to help her make wise choices and to be an encouraging voice and listening ear. He also still makes it a point to help other inmates by encouraging them, mentoring the youth and observing prisoners on suicide watch. All of this because they saw him and "He Looked Like a Likely Suspect"
