COVID-19 Relief: New Zealand Student Loan Repayment Deferral

All around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic is taking a devastating toll on economies, consumer confidence and employment prospects. Many New Zealanders living abroad face 2008 Global Financial Crisis prospects, away from the relative financial security that their families, loved ones and Government could provide when they fall on hard times.

On 31 March 2020, tens of thousands of New Zealanders living abroad will be required to make a significant repayment on their Student Loan debt or face default penalties. For many, the prospect of losing their jobs and paying outstanding bills and rent is looking to be increasingly challenging in the coming months. The pressure of budgeting for a payment of up to $2,500 now and another in 6 months time is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for many. Likewise, New Zealand based borrowers facing unknown employment situations would greatly benefit from a hold on the mandatory student loan deductions on wages.

This petition calls on the New Zealand Government to place a hold on New Zealand Student loan repayments for overseas and domestic borrowers and to temporarily freeze interest accrual until the world finds itself with a more stable and optimistic outlook in the aftermath of this COVID-19 pandemic.

Please sign this petition to raise awareness on the issue of student loan repayments, in the hope that it will lead to meaningful change for everyday Kiwis. Share this petition with your domestic and overseas friends and any 'kiwis abroad' community pages.
