Global Perspective Shift Initiative: Replace 'Followers' with 'Advocates' on Social Media
The Issue

One of my initiatives toward achieving this mission is to shift the global social media narrative of the term 'followers' and 'following' to 'advocates' and 'advocating'.
As an Author, Voice Actor, and a communication management / psychology graduate, I am deeply passionate about the power of language and the impact it has on our perception of ourselves and others.
The connotation associated with the term 'follower' is undesirable, as it implies attaching oneself either to a person or person's beliefs without critical thinking or independent agency. This term takes away from the type of engagement I want to see exist in our culture of social media.
I believe we should replace the terms 'followers' and 'following' with 'advocates' and 'advocating', respectively, across all social media platforms. By doing so, we can foster an improved culture that promotes independent thinking, active engagement, and empowerment.
The word advocate derives from the Latin term "advocare," meaning to add voice. An advocate represents an individual who actively supports a cause or person while maintaining their own unique perspective. Unlike followers who passively consume content without questioning its validity or implications, advocates are critical thinkers who contribute meaningfully to discussions.
By adopting this change worldwide, we can reshape our online communities into spaces that encourage empowered thought patterns, independent thinking, and positive connections.
We CAN CHOOSE to embrace language that reflects our true potential as empowered critical thinkers rather than passive consumers with this shift from 'followers' to 'advocates.'
