Initiate Impeachment Proceedings Against Donald Trump
The Issue
I, like many Americans, feel that Donald Trump is a threat to our democracy.
Donald Trump’s actions during and after his presidency have been widely discussed as threats to democracy, both in terms of his rhetoric and specific actions. Here are some key moments and actions that have been viewed as undermining democratic norms:
Refusal to Accept Election Results (2020): Trump and many of his supporters repeatedly claimed the 2020 election was "stolen," despite no evidence of widespread fraud. This culminated in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, where his supporters attempted to prevent the certification of the election results.
Attempts to Pressure State Officials: Trump tried to pressure Georgia's Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, to "find" enough votes to overturn the election result in Georgia, a direct attempt to interfere with the state's certified election results.
Incitement of the January 6 Capitol Riot: Trump’s rhetoric leading up to and during the January 6th Capitol insurrection has been widely criticized as inciting the violent attack on Congress, which aimed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power.
Disregard for Checks and Balances: Trump frequently undermined the independence of the judiciary and the media, calling the press the "enemy of the people" and attacking judges who ruled against his policies. His public statements often denigrated democratic institutions.
Attacks on the Free Press: Trump’s frequent attacks on journalists, labeling them as "fake news" or "enemies of the people," sought to undermine public trust in the media. This undermines one of the key pillars of democratic society: an independent and free press.
Use of Executive Power to Undermine the System: Trump frequently used executive orders to bypass Congress, and sometimes attempted to push through policies that were seen as undermining democratic processes, such as the controversial travel bans targeting predominantly Muslim countries.
Legal and Constitutional Challenges: Trump sought to undermine legal and constitutional norms, such as when he pardoned individuals involved in criminal actions during his administration, which some saw as attempts to escape accountability and weaken the rule of law.
Disparaging Democracy and the Electoral Process: Trump has made several statements that undermine trust in democratic systems, such as calling elections rigged or fixed without evidence, and questioning the legitimacy of voting by mail or other legal voting methods.
Pressure on the Justice Department: Trump sought to use the Department of Justice for his personal and political gain, including urging the DOJ to investigate his political opponents or to interfere with investigations into his own actions, such as the Russia probe.
Promotion of Authoritarian Ideas: Trump often expressed admiration for authoritarian leaders, including Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-Un, and showed a general disdain for democratic norms and institutions, suggesting a preference for more centralized, unchallenged power.
These actions, among others, have raised concerns about the erosion of democratic principles and checks on executive power during his time in office. Please sign this petition in an effort to get impeachment proceedings started!
