Initiate a Select Committee Inquiry into New Zealand's Independent Police Complaints Authority

The issue

Alan Hall, who spent nineteen long years in prison as an innocent man, significantly forms the basis of this urgent plea. Likewise, another injustice was meted out to Teina Pora, who was wrongfully incarcerated for twenty-two years. In both of these cases, evidence points towards police interference. An urgent inquiry into the performance and structure of New Zealand's Independent Police Complaints Authority is required. It is the body responsible for overseeing the police and ensuring they adhere to the principles of law and justice.

In 2020, an independent review revealed that only half of the performance measures were being met by the Authority. Furthermore, a disturbing 25% of all complaints were straightaway rejected. The inability of the Independent Police Complaints Authority to carry out its duties means the fundamental rights of individuals are left unprotected. This cannot continue.

The House of Representatives of New Zealand must take immediate action to initiate a select committee enquiry into the Authority's performance. It is imperative that we restore faith in our justice system and safeguard the rights of all citizens. Sign this petition and stand for justice, accountability, and transparency in our law enforcement system.
