Initiate a flag redesign contest for Macomb County

The Issue

Many people in Macomb County don't recognize our current flag, and it doesn’t connect with most of us. While it has historical value, it doesn’t truly represent who we are today.

Macomb County has a strong identity linked to our water, including Lake St. Clair and the Clinton River, as well as our diverse communities and residents. A flag should reflect that identity. It needs to be simple, meaningful, and easy to recognize—something we can all be proud of.

A flag redesign contest could be a great chance for our community. It would let residents, students, and local artists work together to create a flag that represents Macomb County now and in the future. This project could also bring us closer as a community. A shared symbol can help build our pride and connection to each other.

Why Now?

As our county continues to grow and change, this is a chance to create a symbol that reflects who we are today.

Other places have had success with this. For example, Ann Arbor started a redesign process in 2023 and adopted a new flag in 2024 that reflects the city today. Macomb County can do the same. We’re not trying to forget our history; we want to create something that resonates with us now. This idea is about bringing residents together around a shared symbol.

If you believe Macomb County deserves a flag people recognize and feel proud of, please consider signing this petition.
