Naija Lives Matter started this petition to INEC Nigeria and

PETITION FOR INEC TO COMMENCE VOTERS REGISTRATION IMMEDIATELY, AND GIVE US OUR VOTERS CARDS NOW!

The Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC], in Nigeria has deliberately deprived millions of Nigerian voters the ability to exercise their right to vote, by failing to comply with the electoral laws of the country, and we demand that they comply with the law and commence voters registration NOW

The right of every adult citizen to vote is enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria, but people cannot vote without first obtaining a PVC from INEC.

The Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC], the body with the responsibility of registering eligible voters and providing Nigerians with Voters Cards In Nigeria, has deliberately deprived millions of Nigerian voters the ability to exercise their right to vote by failing to comply with the electoral laws of the Country.

For years, INEC has deliberately deprived millions of citizens of their rights to vote by making it extremely difficult for Nigerians to register and vote and closing up the registration process in contravention of the law.

We the undersigned demand that the registration process for eligible voters in our nation should be simple, easy, and continuous so that citizens do not need to lose days of work just to obtain their voter’s cards.

Since the last elections in 2019, INEC has refused to open up the registration of voters, while over 50 MILLION eligible voters continue to be illegally deprived of their rights to register and obtain their voters’ cards.

Yet, Section 10 (1)  of the Nigerian Electoral act clearly states that there shall be continuous registration of all persons qualified to register for voters’ cards. Yet, the INEC has refused to follow the law for many years

In addition, Section 9 (5) of the Nigerian Electoral Law requires that registration of voters, updating, and revision of the register of voters shall stop NOT LATER than 60 days before any elections. The INEC, in direct violation of this provision of law, has illegally closed the registration of voters 6 months before each election.

These unfair and illegal actions of the Independent Nigeria Electoral Commission are part of several illegal activities of the executive arm of government to prevent over 50 million eligible Nigerians from obtaining the voter's cards they need to exercise their lawful rights to vote for candidates of their choice at election time.

We the signers of this petition believe that these unlawful activities of INEC represent a clear and present danger to the peace, stability, and progress of our democracy and that of Nigeria as a Nation.

In view of the foregoing, we as citizens of Nigeria hereby demand with this petition that the INEC should:

1. We demand that INEC should obey section 10(1) of the Nigerian Electoral Law and immediately open up all its Voters registration center in all local governments of Nigeria.

2. We demand that they open up citizen voters’ registration at these centers immediately so Nigerians can start registering for their voters’ card

3.We demand that INEC should follow section 9 (5) of the Nigerian Electoral Law by keeping the registration of voter’s exercise open until 60 days before the next election.

If you support the premise of this petition, please sign this petition for INEC to immediately resume the Voter Registration Exercise. We have less than 18 months to the next major election.
