Indonesia: Shut Down the Monkey Torture Networks Filming Abuse for American Clients
The Issue
American men are paying networks in Indonesia to arrange for monkeys — often babies — to be subjected to genital mutilation, violent sexual assault, and filmed abuse on demand. Seventy-nine acts of documented cruelty were allegedly funded by just 11 individuals recently indicted in the United States.
A minor in Indonesia was exploited to carry out the abuse. One American client wrote of the videos: "That video was awesome. Nice and gruesome."
The demand is coming from America. The abuse is happening in Indonesia.
Since Lady Freethinker and Action for Primates first exposed these networks in 2021, 33 prosecutions have taken place globally. American clients are being indicted and convicted. But as long as the networks operating inside Indonesia continue to function — arranging abuse, recruiting perpetrators, and filming custom torture videos for foreign clients — the cruelty will not stop. Prosecuting buyers without dismantling suppliers is not a solution.
Indonesia is home to some of the world's most remarkable primate species. Its monkeys are not commodities to be tortured for the entertainment of foreign clients. The children being recruited to carry out this abuse are not instruments of an international sadism network. Both deserve protection.
We're calling on the Indonesian government to immediately investigate and prosecute the networks operating inside Indonesia that arrange, film, and distribute monkey torture videos for foreign clients — and to pass legislation making the creation and distribution of animal crush videos a serious criminal offense.
