Pass HR Bill 921: Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act 2015

On February 12, 2015 the House of Representatives introduced H.R. 921: The Sports Medicine Licensure Clarity Act. Currently, an individual’s license only covers the medical professional while practicing within his or her licensure state. If an athletic trainer or physician travels across state lines with an athletic team, they may not have any legal protection during their brief trip. While some states may allow so many days for the visiting team’s medical professionals to practice with their respective insurance, there is no guarantee the allotted time frame will cover the entirety of the trip.
This Act states:
“If a covered sports medicine professional provides covered medical services to an athlete, an athletic team, or a staff member of an athlete or athletic team in a secondary State, such services shall be deemed to have been provided in the primary State for the following purposes:
(1) Determining the medical professional liability insurance of that professional.
(2) Determining the civil and criminal malpractice liability of that professional.”
If H.R. 921 is passed, physicians, athletic trainers and any other sports medicine professional working with an athletic team will be relieved of any professional risk one previously bore.
