Friends,
Keith Cooper's case has been featured in a ten-minute segment of the social media news site The Young Turks. The segment is online at YouTube: https://youtu.be/HQlDZBGkiEw. I don't endorse everything they say, but this is a useful video, and at YouTube, I've posted some strategies for using the video to help our effort. I'll paste those below. I'll make two corrections first: Sometimes, the conversation goes to whether a person in Keith Cooper's situation may vote. The law varies from state to state, but in both Illinois, where Cooper lives, and in Indiana, persons who have been released from prison may vote. Secondly, Indiana doesn't have a law to compensate those who have been wrongfully convicted and/or incarcerated. However, whether a governor gives Cooper a full pardon or he is exonerated through the court, he may still be awarded compensation by a court.
Now, for the strategies I've posted on YouTube:
Alright, YouTubers, do you genuinely want to do something about this? Because you can. I created the petition to support a petition for Cooper: https://www.change.org/p/indiana-governor-pardon-an-innocent-man. But getting signatures is less important than getting results, and there are ways to get results.
To target Mike Pence, there's contact information here: http://in.gov/gov/2333.htm. If you use the email box, select topic "Governor, Office of the." There's also a phone number supporters of the petition have been calling: 317-232-4567. There will be call handlers Monday - Friday. And certainly, you may post links to this video as comments on Mike Pence's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mikepence/. For Twitter, he has two accounts: @mike_pence and @GovPenceIN. Oh, and he has a particularly supercilious spokesman who deserves thousands of links to this video. Send this to @MatthewLloyd.
The current district attorney of Elkhart County, Indiana, is Curtis Hill, who is also currently the GOP candidate to be Indiana's next Attorney General. He made the deal in 2006 with Keith Cooper that required him to keep the conviction on his record. We have been calling on him to admit his wrong and to do like his former deputy prosecutor, asking Pence to pardon Cooper. You may email him using the link here: http://www.elkhartcountyprosecutor.com/contact. If you want to call the prosecutor's office on Monday - Friday, their number is (574) 296-1888. Facebook pages are for Hill, https://www.facebook.com/curtishillforindiana/ and for the Elkhart County Prosecutor's Office: https://www.facebook.com/Elkhart-County-Prosecutor-214420695243856/. Reach him at Twitter: @CurtisHill_IN
One other person to contact, the current GOP candidate to be Indiana's next governor, Eric Holcomb. His Democratic opponent John Gregg, mentioned in the video, has pledged to pardon Keith Cooper if he is elected. But we have not gotten any such pledge from Lt. Governor Eric Holcomb. His email contact link is: http://in.gov/lg/2333.htm. His phone number, for use Monday - Friday, 317-232-4545. But we suspect that these are not often monitored, and Holcomb's campaign website only gives this email link: https://action.holcombforindiana.com/comment/contact-us_20160830/?_ga=1.108430914.1924021185.1472068066. If you want to place a phone call, we suggest calling the Indiana GOP at 317-635-7561 to get the message to Holcomb that he has to pledge to pardon Cooper if he's elected. Here's other contact information for the Indiana GOP: http://indiana.gop/contact.

We are making progress, friends, slowly but surely.
