Friends, yesterday we got 286 signatures, today 103. Though the number dropped some, we went over 1000 total signatures to date, currently standing at 1037. A few things happened since the last update. First, we did some research of Illinois laws and found out that even while he is waiting for his pardon, Keith Cooper will be able to vote this year. Laws vary from state to state, but Illinois restores the right to vote to ex-offenders when they have completely their incarcerations. Of course, Mr. Cooper was never an offender in the first place, but we were happy to find out that he can vote. Second, the African American Intellectual History Society has a blog which has published an article I've written about Keith Cooper's case. My main purpose in the article was to present a history, first of the injustices of his conviction, and second of Governor Pence's determined inaction on the pardon and exoneration. You may find the article here: http://www.aaihs.org/keith-cooper-the-stigma-of-black-criminality-on-an-almost-exonerated-man/ I think the thing Mr. Cooper's case needs right now is more publicity. Please share the petition and the article on your Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. I also think it would help to target a few media and public individual about this case. Could I ask you to send four tweets within the next 24 hours? Tweet either the petition or the AAIHS article (or both) to @geedee215, for NPR reporter Gene Demby, @shaunking, for Shaun King, a reporter for the New York Daily News and a Black Lives Matter activist, and @GovPenceIN. Then tweet me to let me know you've done this. I'd appreciate as large a number of tweets as we can get. If you have questions, concerns, or comments about all of this, please feel free to email me at jheller@huntington.edu. Thank you for supporting the petition.
