Freshwater is limited let’s keep it clean! Stop illegal dumping and spillage In our water
The Issue
- Water is life! Our Great Lakes and freshwater are being destroyed by refineries and steel mills illegal dumping and spillage. Our drinking water is pulled in about 1 to 2 miles offshore and the chemicals that are being dumped/spilled do not just go away. They circulate through the water and eventually end up in our drinking water. Many of the chemicals that are being released into our freshwater supplies are known to cause cancer, other severe health problems and death. I don’t believe anybody would give their baby a bottle water with a drop of Hexavalent chromium, cyanide or ammonia. Industries are dumping these exact chemicals into our fresh water supply daily!
Our great lakes have already been decimated by invasive species, endangering many native species of fish. Spilling or dumping further dramatize the problem and what fish do survive are now tainted with high levels of carcinogens. The saying goes, if you give a person a fish they can eat for a day if you teach a person to fish they can’t eat for life! When the water gets so tainted there are no fish what’s gonna be left to eat and drink?
To impose a fine on these perpetrators for their actions of spilling and dumping has seemingly been nothing more than a slap on the wrist of a big bully. The punishments need to be more severe.
1. Fines for dumping shall exceed the cost of proper disposal.
2.Fines for spillage shall exceed the cost of proper repairs or proper equipment that would have prevented a spill.
3. If a business is found guilty of three or more spills or illegal dumps in a ten-year period the business shall be suspended from operations or shut down indefinitely.
If you are a skeptic and say well what about the thousands of jobs, I ask what about the millions that are being affected and polluted. At some point the ecosystem will be destroyed, life will cease to exist in that area, jobs will not matter... The environment is being destroyed in many ways. It is our responsibility as the keepers of this planet to ensure a healthy ecosystem for future generations and take steps where we can. This is one step that we can and should take!!!
