Chennai to Kanyakumari(via Karaikudi,Tuticorin, Tiruchendur)-Forgotten ECR Railway project
The Issue
Unemployment in the Southern Districts, Poverty, Unemployment and lack of adequate structural facilities have been in the backdrop of many districts in the south. Due to lack of sufficient employment facilities, thousands of people are traveling towards Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore everyday. In the southern districts of Madurai, railways in all districts other than Kanyakumari district were set up during the British period.
Train users from the region are urging the railway ministry to consider their long pending demand of laying East Coast Railway line from Karaikudi, to Kanyakumari via Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur, Udankudi and Kudankulam. A new railway line along East Coast Road between Karaikudi and Kanniyakumari via Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur and Rameswaram has been shelved by the railway board.
This route has tourism and various spiritual sites. If the route is set up, it will be convenient for cargo transport to the pier.On this route, new power projects with multi-crore investment in Koodankulam and Udangudi areas are being implemented. If the project is fulfilled, coastal districts will benefit greatly. This project will be a great success for the Ramanathapuram district of the dense district. The people of Tamil Nadu expect that the South Tamil Nadu MPs should take steps to implement this project immediately.
Though the survey work for the east coast line was conducted in 2008, the project remained in cold storage for the last few years as the new line was considered unviable by the board. However recently, railways came forward to reconsider its decision if the State government agreed to set up a special purpose vehicle for railway projects.
The proposed new line projects are Karaikudi-Thoothukudi via Ramanathapuram (214.81 km), Ramanathapuram-Kanniyakumari via Thoothukudi, Tiruchendur and Kudankulam (247.66 km)
Please sign this petition to urge the Indian railway and the Tamil Nadu government to start this railway project immediately
