The Ambassador car (1958-2014), based on the Morris Oxford Series III has created a world record by its being the same car model, produced from the same assembly line for the longest period ever, viz. 56 years. It has an iconic status in India and has touched the lives of nearly every Indian during its production run of 56 years and even after. Even today the remaining cars are doing their duties faithfully. Ambulances, cabs, privately owned cars, sedans ferrying VIP's and VVIP's including several Indian PM's, bureaucrats, iconic personalities like R. K. Laxman, Raj Kapoor, Mark Tully, Satyajit Ray and many others, older filmstars and even hearses of this make have adorned the Indian roads for ages. The Ambassador has quintessentially become a part of the Indian folklore too. And the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, USA, has an Ambassador as an exhibit (the only car there from India). In many countries, iconic cars have been archived in commemorative postal stamps since many decades. Our uncrowned national car, the Ambassador, is very well qualified to deserve a fitting tribute through the release of a commemorative postal stamp to honour it's contribution since decades transporting us and for its iconic standing in the Indian mindset.
