Petition: India BAN Social Media for Children Under 16:
#16years.in
#BachpanBachao!
To the Government of India and the Ministry of Electronics & IT,
Our children are being robbed of their childhood.
In every Indian household, a silent crisis is unfolding. At just 13 years old, a time when our children should be focused on their Sanskars, studies, sports, and real-world friendships, understanding the true meaning of nation building, they are being handed over to predatory algorithms designed to hook them for life.
Social media is not a playground; it is a "Digital Nasha" (Digital Addiction). Like any addiction, it requires a legal cure to protect our future.
Current laws allow 13-year-olds to enter a world of unregulated content, cyberbullying, and toxic comparison, highly addictive games.
The 2026 Economic Survey has already sounded the alarm: our youth are suffering from depression, short focused, sleep debt, anxiety, and a massive loss of productivity. We have already lost one generation to the screen; we refuse to lose a new one to the infinite scroll and unmonitored reels.
We demand an immediate BAN on social media accounts for anyone under 16.
We are the 16 Years movement (16years.in). We are launching a "Bachpan Bachao" (Save Childhood) mission. We refuse to let Big Tech exploit Indian children for data and future consumption addiction. We urge the Government to implement the "Parental Shield" a law that empowers parents to say "No" to social media because "it’s the law," finally taking the crushing peer pressure off our families.
Our Demands to the Government of India:
ENFORCE A HARD BAN: Immediately raise the legal age for social media citizenship to 16. No more loopholes. No more excuses.
STOP THE DATA HARVESTING: No platform should be allowed to touch, track, or profile the data of an Indian child under 16. Our children's privacy is non-negotiable.
STRICT PUNISHMENT: Hold tech giants and their executives criminally and financially liable. We demand an individual fine of $1 Million USD (approx. ₹8.3 Crore) for every single account held by a child under 16, alongside criminal cases against the platform’s executives.
USE THE AADHAAR SHIELD: Use India’s world-class digital infrastructure to verify age securely via DigiLocker or Aadhaar tokens.
Let technology ensure our kids stay out of harm's way while their privacy stays in.
Australia has done it. Spain and France are doing it. What is India waiting for? Every day we delay, another child falls victim to an online predator or a mental health struggle. Give our children back their 36 months of innocence.
