The issue

Access on trains and trams for people with disabilities is limited and outdated in Australia. People in wheelchairs, mobility scooters, the elderly, children, parents with prams and people with all forms of disability can not board trains without being helped by the train driver, and can not board kerb tram stops at all.

Train stations will all never be accessible for people with disabilities unless immediate action is taken to introduce permanent, safe, and independent boarding solutions. Relying on train drivers to manually assist passengers is unsafe, inconsistent, and degrading. Tram networks, especially at kerb stops, completely exclude people who cannot physically step up into a vehicle.

We call on transport authorities and government bodies to urgently prioritise the installation of compliant boarding aids, accessible infrastructure, and modern solutions that allow all passengers — regardless of ability — to travel freely, independently, and with dignity.

Australia cannot claim to support equality while public transport remains inaccessible to so many. Equal access is a basic human right, not a privilege.

Solutions already exist. Modular Transport Access Solutions (MODTAS) offers practical, compliant boarding systems that can make public transport accessible now — not in decades. We urge authorities to take immediate action and implement real solutions like these to guarantee safe, independent travel for all Australians.
