Indefinitely halt data center production to prioritize community health
Indefinitely halt data center production to prioritize community health
The Issue
Data centers are springing up around us at an alarming rate, consuming vast amounts of energy, water, and space, directly impacting our health and environment. In our community and many others, we've witnessed the detrimental effects on air quality, noise levels, and local ecosystems. It's becoming increasingly clear that the unchecked growth of these facilities poses significant health risks, particularly in dense or urban areas where pollution and resource strain are already critical concerns.
These centers require tremendous amounts of electricity to operate and cool, significantly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbating climate change. According to the International Energy Agency, data centers account for about 1% of global electricity demand, with projections only set to increase. Additionally, their demand for water for cooling purposes further depletes our precious and often limited water resources.
We cannot sacrifice our community's well-being for technological advancements that can be pursued with more sustainable methods and technologies. There are alternatives, such as enhancing energy efficiency, investing in renewable energy sources, or distributing data centers more safely and sustainably. The technology industry must prioritize human life and environmental sustainability rather than pursuing unfettered expansion.
We implore policymakers, industry leaders, and urban developers to take immediate action and put a moratorium on building new data centers. Let's prioritize the health of our communities and the well-being of our planet first. We urge them to explore and invest in more eco-friendly technological solutions that align with our urgent climate and health goals.
Please sign this petition to demand an immediate halt to data center production and push for sustainable solutions that do not compromise our health or environment.
