Increase the National Living Wage to £14 Per Hour to Combat Rising Inflation and Ensure a Liveable Income

To the British Government,

We, the undersigned, urge you to address the critical issue of the national living wage in light of the escalating cost of living in England.

The current wage of £12.21 per hour is insufficient when considering the financial pressures faced by individuals and families due to inflation and rising expenses. 

The Problem:

• Insufficient Take-Home Pay:

After taxes and National Insurance, the hourly wage drops to approximately £11.90, leaving workers with a monthly income of £2062.76 This amount, when set against essential expenses of £1,300-£1,600 per month, leaves minimal disposable income, making saving for the future, such as a mortgage deposit, nearly impossible. 

• Soaring Living Costs:

The 6.4% increase in the energy price cap and an 8.7% rise in private rents have exacerbated financial strain, pushing many into unaffordable housing and reducing their ability to cover basic needs.

The Solution:

We call for an increase in the national living wage to at least £14 per hour, aligning it with inflation and recent rent increases. This adjustment would provide workers with a reasonable income that covers living expenses and allows for savings.
