Increasing representation of occupational therapy in popular media
The Issue
As occupational therapy (OT) students, we are continuously captivated by the transformative impact our field has on individuals and communities. However, despite its critical role in healthcare, occupational therapy remains under recognized and often misunderstood by the general public. Our mission is to change this by advocating for increased representation of occupational therapy in popular media.
Occupational therapy is unique in its holistic approach, focusing on helping people across their lifespan by engaging in meaningful activities, whether recovering from injury, managing chronic illness, or promoting health and well-being. Our interventions are evidence-based and tailored to the client's specific needs, reducing disability and fostering independence.
The lack of awareness surrounding OT limits its reach and, ultimately, the number of individuals and families who could benefit from it. Media has a profound influence on public opinion and awareness. By showcasing the real-life stories of occupational therapists and their clients, we can highlight the profession and the essential services we provide. Popular TV shows, movies, and documentaries have the power to portray the diverse and impactful cases encountered by OTs, promoting a wider understanding and appreciation of our profession's value. In class we were tasked with completing a equity project for an issue in the OT world. We chose to focus on OT in the media and more specifically television shows like The Pitt and Grey's Anatomy. These shows showcase the work of doctors, nurses, surgeons, and PT's but fail to include OT representation.
We call upon our fellow OT students, OT practitioners, families and other supporters to join us in signing our petition to increase awareness and representation of occupational therapy in popular media. Your signature can spark a movement towards a more informed and inclusive portrayal of OT, ultimately benefiting countless individuals who rely on our services for a better quality of life. Please sign the petition and help spread the word about the amazing contributions of occupational therapy.
