The Issue

Living near Riverside Parkway in Grand Junction, Colorado, I've observed how the current speed limit of 40 MPH between 24 Road and 29 Road seems misplaced. This area sees a regular flow of traffic moving at higher speeds, often between 50-55 MPH. These speeds more accurately reflect the pace of everyday drivers rather than the posted limit. Thus, revising the speed limit to align with realistic driving patterns could prevent many motorists from being unnecessarily ticketed.

The Riverside Parkway is a key route for many travelers and serves as a significant connector in our road system. The increase in speed limit would ensure that traffic moves more fluidly without causing undue stress or unnecessary infractions for drivers adhering to natural flow of traffic. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for law enforcement to focus on more critical safety issues rather than routine speed violations.

Analyzing traffic data can reveal that a higher speed limit could be managed safely, contributing to a more harmonious movement of traffic. Numerous studies indicate that roads where speed limits best reflect the pace of traffic have fewer accidents. The Safety on Main Roads in our neighboring states have showcased success stories of similar speed limit adjustments leading to decreased accident rates and smoother commutes.

Furthermore, establishing a speed limit that maintains pace with actual driving behavior supports economic efficiency. It reduces time spent on the road, which in turn can lead to less fuel consumption and lower emissions, aligning with our wider environmental goals.

I urge city officials and the relevant transportation authorities to consider this common-sense change. Let's align the speed limit on Riverside Parkway with reality, enhancing the safety, efficiency, and fairness of our local infrastructure. Please support this initiative by signing this petition and help make a tangible difference in our community.

The following is an email response we received regarding this petition.] Thanks for reaching out and letting me know about the petition Jason. I very much pay attention to petitions and citizen comments we get every day. The Riverside Parkway abuts residential, commercial and recreational areas in the community and only part of it could handle higher speeds. We have some serious bike/ped safety issues here and this would be a big change to an area getting more multi modal traffic. I’ll mention this to our traffic engineers and see what they think. Thank you, Scott Beilfuss
