Increase the Paternity Pay for Men in the UK
The Issue
I am a soon-to-be father, and my wife is due in April. The joy of expecting our first child is overshadowed by the financial stress we are facing. To take two weeks off to support my new family, I am expected to lose £1,000 pay before tax under current paternity pay rules in the UK. This means that if I take paternity leave, we won't be able to afford our rent.
The current statutory paternity pay is £151.20 or 90% of their average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for one or two weeks' leave. This puts a significant financial burden on families at a time when they need stability the most.
This isn't just about me; it's about all fathers who want to be there for their newborns and partners without risking their family's financial security. It's time to reassess these outdated rules that do not reflect today's cost of living nor promote gender equality in parenting responsibilities.
We urge the UK government to increase men’s statutory paternity pay so it better supports families during this crucial period. Sign this petition if you believe that fathers should not have to choose between being present at home during such an important time and providing financially for their families.
