Increase the Minimum Sentencing for Child Abuse

The Issue

Child abuse is a very important topic because it can greatly affect a child's physical and mental development. Unfortunately, many cases go unreported due to different concerns. It is important to be observant and attentive because mistreated or neglected children are more likely to continue this harmful cycle with their own future children.

Child abuse is a serious problem in Canada, that deserves more attention. I believe that stricter penalties are necessary to address this issue. The minimum sentence for an indictable offence is 45 days, with a maximum of 10 years. For a summary conviction, the minimum sentence is 14 days, and cannot exceed 18 months. I believe that the minimum sentence should be increased to help solve this problem.

Child abuse, or any type of abuse even is not something that should be overlooked. If a child has been abused for fifteen years, how come their abuser will only be imprisoned for a maximum of 10 years? On some occasions, their time in prison could be even less. Why is that the case? I want to change this law for all the kids who are or have been abused, to reassure them that their abuser will get their punishment.
