The Issue

Imagine being a girl at Mark Twain Middle School and stepping into a bathroom stall, only to feel exposed because the stall doors reach just about 59 inches in height. This is the daily reality for many female students here and it's a significant invasion of privacy. For years, too many of us have had to deal with this unsettling lack of privacy, making what should be a private and secure part of our daily routine into a source of stress and discomfort.

Meanwhile, the school invests resources into non-essential projects, such as repainting the front of the building. The discrepancy between where funds are allocated and where they need to be spent is concerning.

Our ask is simple yet impactful—incrementally increase the height of bathroom stalls, starting with one bathroom at a time. This gradual approach won't strain the budget and will significantly enhance student privacy. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, around 20% of students experience discomfort in school facilities, affecting their well-being and concentration in class. Improvements like these lead to healthier, more focused learning environments.

Mark Twain Middle School prides itself on fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment. Let’s ensure this is reflected in our school facilities by aligning them with the needs and comfort of our diverse student body. Please join us in calling on the school administration to prioritize student privacy by signing this petition. With your support, we can advocate for a respectful and private restroom environment.
