Increase the Font Size & introduce easy read format on Food Labels for Clearer Readability

The Issue

I stand before you not only as a concerned citizen but as a full-time carer. The disability and elderly community, that I work tirelessly to support, is often overlooked in contemporary society's fast-paced and high-stakes culture. One issue that may seem trivial to many, but dramatically affects this population's life, is the small font size on food labels.

For those among us with sight difficulties, deciphering small fonts on food labels isn't just an annoyance—it's a daily struggle. This struggle often leads to detrimental health choices due to inability to clearly read ingredients, nutritional facts, and expiry dates. Food labelling, by law, must be explicitly clear and legible, yet current standards fall short of meeting this requirement.

According to RNIB, nearly two million people in the UK are living with sight loss that is significant enough to have a massive impact on their daily lives. Furthermore, statistics from Vision Council reveals that 16.4% of adults over the age of 60 reported symptoms of traditional age-related vision loss. When contemplating these numbers, remember that every single one represents a real person who has to grapple with the disproportionately small print on food packaging.

We urge the government and food producers to re-evaluate the current standards regarding font size on food labels. Increase the print size so that our disabled and elderly can confidently make informed, healthy decisions about the food they consume. Join us in making the world of consumer products a more inclusive place for people of all abilities. Please sign our petition.
