My son Max, a vibrant 5-year-old boy diagnosed with ASD level 3 and ADHD, is one of many children in Victoria who are not adequately catered for by our current education system. Max has severe difficulties with emotional regulation, speech, social skills and has no sense of danger or road safety. Despite these challenges, he doesn't qualify for a Special School as his IQ is too high and he doesn't have an intellectual disability.

Like many other children on the autism spectrum, mainstream schools are not equipped to provide him with the support he needs. This leaves us in a precarious situation where our children's educational needs are not being met. 

The number of kids diagnosed with autism is increasing every year. Yet there's an alarming lack of schools available to properly support their high needs. Many kids with autism abscond from mainstream schools due to inadequate support structures. 

It's time we address this issue head-on by increasing the availability of Autism Specific Schools in Victoria. These specialized institutions can provide tailored learning environments that better suit the unique needs of autistic students like Max.
