Animals have always been a special part of my life. My beloved dog was adopted from a shelter, but unfortunate circumstances meant he could not stay with my family. Thankfully, he found a forever home where he could be happy. It is in his memory that I write this plea for increased support for the pet shelters and stray animals in Contra Costa County, CA.

Animal shelters provide essential services within our community, offering care and shelter to stray, abandoned, and surrendered pets. However, these shelters often operate with limited resources and are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals needing help. As residents of Contra Costa County, we have the opportunity and responsibility to ensure that these vulnerable creatures are not forgotten.

Statistics from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, reveal that over 5.8 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters every year, yet only around 2.7 million find homes. With more support from the local government and from caring citizens, we can reduce this gap significantly in our own county. Providing shelters with adequate funding, volunteers, and resources is crucial.

I propose that Contra Costa County increases funding for local animal shelters. This funding would go towards better facilities, more staffing, and essential veterinary care. We could also establish community programs aimed at educating the public about responsible pet ownership and the benefits of adoption. Such measures would encourage more adoptions and reduce the population of stray animals.

As a member of the Peace Warrior’s Global Youth Program (GYP-2025), I want nothing more than to make a positive impact on the world and connect with the values of The Peace Warrior.
