Increase support for mental health patients

Increase support for mental health patients
The Issue
My son suffers from schizoaffective disorder, among other things, and is in active psychosis every day. This has been a continuous battle for years, resulting in a heartbreaking cycle of home, crisis, and incarceration. He doesn't need punishment; he needs dedicated mental health support. His offenses are non-violent and related to homelessness, like finding a place to sleep or stealing food when he hasn't had his medication. This vicious cycle has not only put his safety at risk but has also put me at risk of eviction as I dedicate my time to caring for him. His illness should not be a reason for his exclusion from society but a call for more humane understanding and assistance.
Mental health patients like my son deserve more than what they are currently receiving. People living with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and similar afflictions face lifetime struggles that make employment and stable housing nearly impossible. They need a support system that offers compassion and a deeper understanding of their unique needs, beyond what is currently available.
It's clear that there is a systemic lack of resources available for mental health patients. Reports show that nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness (52.9 million in 2020), yet many struggle to access the services they desperately need due to funding shortages, outdated delivery models, and societal stigma.
To combat this, we require actionable solutions: increased funding for mental health services, the establishment of comprehensive care facilities that prioritize rehabilitation over incarceration, and inclusive housing policies that do not discriminate against those with mental health conditions. Such measures will not only benefit those directly affected but will foster understanding and empathy in broader society, reducing the stigma that surrounds mental health discussions.
We urge legislators, healthcare policymakers, and community leaders to prioritize mental health as a critical part of public health. It’s time for a mature, well-funded approach to this crisis and for the establishment of programs that provide the holistic support these individuals deserve.
Please join me in advocating for increased support and resources for mental health patients. Sign this petition to make a difference in the lives of countless families and to honor the inherent dignity and potential of every individual struggling with mental health issues. Together, we can push for the changes they so desperately need.
