Increase stipends for BDS interns in India
The Issue
Having spent countless hours studying through my Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program, I am now officially an intern, working hard every day with unwavering dedication and commitment. However, like many of my fellow BDS interns across India, I face financial strain because of the insufficient stipend provided during this crucial period of our professional development.
The current stipend offered to BDS interns in India is alarmingly low, forcing us to juggle academic obligations, clinical duties, and financial burdens with little to no support. According to recent reports, while medical interns in India receive stipends that somewhat reflect the demanding nature of their training, dental interns receive a fraction of that amount. This stark disparity not only devalues our contributions to the healthcare system but also creates an unfair working environment.
An increase in stipends is essential not just for financial stability but also for morale and motivation. Many interns are from diverse backgrounds and have aspirations to further their education or support family members, which becomes incredibly challenging given our current financial situation. A fair stipend would allow us to focus on gaining practical experience and honing our skills without the constant worry of financial hardship.
Moreover, increasing stipends would align with the government’s broader initiative of improving healthcare services in India. As dental professionals, we play a critical role in public health, providing essential services that prevent and treat oral diseases. Our training and work contribute significantly to the overall well-being of the nation.
I urge the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and dental colleges across India to recognize the need for an immediate and substantial increase in the stipends for BDS interns. By doing so, we not only invest in the future of dental healthcare but also ensure a more equitable and motivating environment for upcoming professionals.
Your support is crucial. Join us in advocating for a fair stipend for BDS interns so that we can continue to develop as skilled, compassionate healthcare providers. Please sign this petition and help us bring about this necessary change.
