Increase Salary Increments for Teachers in Mississippi

Increase Salary Increments for Teachers in Mississippi

The Issue

As a teacher in the state of Mississippi, I hereby voice the glaring disparate treatment experienced by us in the education sector. We invest extensive energy, time, and effort in shaping the future of our nation, yet we are tragically undervalued and undercompensated. Each degree obtained, demonstrative of our dedication and professional growth, should bring with it an increase in the salary of at least 6 to 8 thousand dollars. After all, it is because of our relentless efforts that we have politicians, doctors, lawyers, and nurses.

Regrettably, recent salary increases have been pitifully inadequate. The 5 thousand dollar raise afforded to us was nothing more than a brutal insult. Many of my colleagues did not even see a minor increase of two hundred dollars on their monthly check. Furthermore, the dated method of monthly payment is increasingly onerous and needs an urgent revamp.

Studies have continually demonstrated that higher teacher pay can lead to better student outcomes (source: Center for American Progress). Paying teachers what they deserve is an investment in our future, but Mississippi lags desperately behind other states in terms of teacher compensation. It is time for sincere recognition of the vital role teachers play in society.

We need your support to change this unendurable status quo. Join us in urging the state legislation to review and enhance the income increments for teachers, making them commensurate with their hard work and the significant responsibility they carry.
