The Issue

My child, a first-grader in Chesterfield County, frequently comes home tired yet restless, expressing frustration over the insufficient time he and his classmates have to release their energy during school hours. It's not just him – many children face classroom interruptions caused by excess energy and the inability to sit still for prolonged periods. The current schedule allows minimal time for children to engage in free movement and play, activities that are scientifically proven to enhance their cognitive abilities, attention spans, learning efficiencies, and emotional regulation.

Research underscores the importance of recess in the broad development of young students. According to a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, recess is crucial for the development of not only physical health but also social skills and academic performance. A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention further highlights that physical activity during the school day can improve concentration and attention and even reduce disruptive behavior.

By increasing recess time, we can create a more conducive learning environment that fosters better behavior and a healthier outlook towards school. Longer recess periods can provide necessary pauses from academic challenges, allowing students to return to their studies with renewed focus and enthusiasm.

Chesterfield County has the opportunity to set a positive example by adopting policies that prioritize the holistic well-being and development of our children. Let's come together as parents, educators, and concerned community members to advocate for this necessary change.

Join us in urging the Chesterfield School Board to increase recess time in elementary schools. Sign the petition today to support a future where our children are given every opportunity to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

UPDATE:

Thank you to everyone who has signed and shared the petition!

It’s wonderful to see that there are many of us that see this as an important issue.

Update: At this point I have spoken to several School Board members and although they were gracious and supportive of the cause; it is clear that increasing recess time without increasing the length of the school day is impossible. And I know that most of us do not want that. I have also reached out to the Superintendent of the VA Board of Education and was told that even though this is an issue that is supported; changing the requirement of the instructional hours for the year is more of a legislative issue. This means that speaking with our delegates and advocating for this issue at the general assembly level would be necessary. Please let me know if you would be open to connecting and being part of a coalition of parents who can take this on. Unless I can find like minded people who are willing to continue with the cause; I will most likely not continue to take this on. Thank you again for all of your support!
