Increase Punishments for Acts of Animal Cruelty
The Issue
Imagine two dogs living a life of constant neglect and ultimately, abandoned on a freezing mountaintop. Now picture another, a dog that was brutally kicked to death by its owner. The latter perpetrator only faced a mere 9-week imprisonment. The anguish these animals faced is heartbreaking, and the soft approach towards the culprits is deeply disturbing. These instances of abuse reflect the derisive treatment of animal rights and their abusers' comfort in escaping implications.
Animal abuse isn't a subject that only causes distress to me as a concerned witness of these acts, but it also provokes outrage and disgust in a majority of society. However, more often than not, our justice system fails to reflect this outrage in the punishments meted out to culprits of these cruel acts.
Animal cruelty is a grave crime, and yet, too often, the punishments allotted far from reflect this seriousness. A study shows in the U.K, the current maximum prison sentence for those found guilty of animal cruelty is a minimal six months (Source: BBC). This punishment is paltry compared to the lifelong traumas and pain the animals endured. This inequality in the treatment of crimes committed against humans versus animals only emphasizes the need for our society to revisit and recreate its laws.
The time has come to send a clear signal that we will not tolerate such abominable acts. We call upon the lawmakers to increase the penalties and prison sentences for animal cruelty. Let's make justice not just for humans, but for all sentient beings that share our Earth. Your support ensures a voice for the voiceless and gives the animals the respect and safety they deserve.
Please sign this petition to enact meaningful legislation to mandate stiffer penalties for those guilty of animal cruelty. Your signature can save countless innocent lives and prevent future acts of cruelty.
