Petition for the Burlington City Government to Introduce Dedicated Police Foot Patrols Downtown 
 
Our downtown area, an integral part of our community, has become a source of concern for many residents and local business owners. We have  attended multiple community meetings, where surveys and discussions consistently highlight the need for increased policing presence for various reasons. From concerns about safety during evening hours, to ensuring a more welcoming environment for businesses and visitors alike, the plea for more visible policing is clear and urgent. 
 
Research conducted by various urban studies and criminology departments underscores the effectiveness of foot patrols in improving community safety. Unlike vehicle patrols, foot patrols offer more personal interaction between police officers and the community, fostering trust, helping to prevent crime before it occurs, and allowing officers to respond more quickly to incidents.  
 
Moreover, implementing police foot patrols downtown can have a positive economic impact. A safer environment encourages more foot traffic, which in turn benefits local businesses. Studies suggest that crime reduction directly correlates with increased business revenue and decreased vacancy rates in retail spaces. 
 
We understand that budget constraints are a common concern. However, reallocation of resources to support foot patrols can be a cost-effective measure in the long term. Reducing crime and creating a welcoming atmosphere downtown would reduce costs associated with crime response and its economic consequences. 
 
We urge our municipal government to prioritize the safety and prosperity of our downtown area by implementing dedicated police foot patrols. By doing so, we can create a more secure, vibrant, and business-friendly environment for all.
